Drawn bonnets are bonnets that use cane, reeds or sometimes cord threaded into channels sewn into fabric for support. These bonnets can be made from a solid color silk fabric, like taffeta, and would be worn by upper class women for a fancy event. For a more everyday bonnet, a cotton or polished cotton would be proper. Cotton bonnets could be a solid color with small floral prints, or very-very small check (black or dark brown and white). The fabric for a drawn bonnet can be cut on the straight of grain or on the bias. It is suggested that you cut on the bias, because it does give you a little more latitude when stitching the channels for your cane.

Some parts of the bonnet have to be hand sewn, but you can sew the channels on the sewing machine or by hand. Both the brown bonnets on the cover were done 100% by hand but the blue one was done as much as possible on the machine. It is difficult to tell the difference unless you look very closely at the stitches.
